Semaglutide INjections
Active ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®
Semaglutide injections mimic a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation, leading to decreased hunger and caloric intake. Semaglutide has shown significant weight reduction results and is used with lifestyle modifications for the best outcomes.
- Improved Blood Sugar Control: In patients with type 2 diabetes, semaglutide helps lower blood sugar levels by mimicking the action of GLP-1.
- Weight Loss: shown to reduce appetite and food intake, leading to significant weight loss in individuals with obesity or overweight, including those without diabetes.
- Convenient Dosing: Once-weekly injections offer a convenient option for individuals who may struggle with daily medication regimens.
- Improved Metabolic Health: Besides lowering blood sugar and aiding in weight loss, it can also improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
Tirzepatide
Active ingredient in Mounjaro®
For informational purposes only. Not available for injection.
A newer addition to weight loss therapies, Tirzepatide injections combine the actions of two hormones, enhancing its effectiveness in controlling blood sugar and facilitating weight loss. Tirzepatide has been successful in clinical trials, showing promising results in weight reduction.
- Controls Blood Sugar: Helps your body handle sugar better. Important for people with diabetes that struggle to keep sugar levels stable.
- Helps with Weight Loss: Makes you feel less hungry, so you eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
- Good for Your Heart: Can lower the bad fats in your blood, which is beneficial for your heart .
- Protects Kidneys and Liver: Might also help keep your kidneys and liver working well, which is important because diabetes can harm these organs.
- Easy to Use: Weekly in-office injections, simpler than medicines that need to be taken every day.
These medications represent the forefront of medical weight management, regulating appetite and insulin levels to aid in weight loss. Semaglutide, often recognized for its role in treating diabetes, has been found to significantly reduce body weight when used in higher doses for weight loss. Tirzepatide, similarly, has shown promising results in clinical trials, aiding in substantial weight reduction by affecting both glucose control and weight management pathways. Under the supervision of a healthcare professional, these injections are tailored to your specific needs, ensuring optimal safety and effectiveness.

About Prescription Medications for Weight Loss
Prescription medications may be a viable weight loss option in a controlled medical setting. The DEA regulates many of these FDA-approved weight loss drugs, ensuring their safety and efficacy when utilized properly. Traditional options include phentermine (known commercially as Adipex) and other stimulant-based appetite suppressants like Bontril/phendimetrazine, benzphetamine, and diethylpropion. In addition, newer oral medications such as Qsymia, Contrave, and Saxenda have received FDA approval for weight loss in the past decade. In June 2021, Wegovy became the first once-weekly injection to be FDA-approved specifically for weight loss purposes. Since May 2022, Mounjaro has been approved for treating diabetes, with ongoing trials aiming for its approval in chronic weight management.
Weight-Loss Injections vs. Oral Medications
Oral weight-loss medications are generally more accessible and less costly compared to injectable options like semaglutide. However, the weight loss achieved with oral medications may not be as significant.
- Phentermine: As one of the oldest weight-loss medications available, Phentermine is recognized for its affordability and short-term benefits. It’s prescribed for a few weeks due to the potential for developing tolerance and its status as a controlled substance, which may limit its effectiveness over time.
- Qsymia: A combination of phentermine and topiramate, Qsymia offers a more extended usage period than phentermine alone. It shows an average weight loss of about 5% to 10%, depending on the dosage. This combination aims to provide a longer-term weight loss solution than phentermine.
- Contrave: Contrave combines bupropion and naltrexone and is another oral medication option for weight loss. When accompanied by diet and exercise, it has been shown to result in an average loss of about 9% of baseline body weight after 56 weeks. However, Contrave’s potential drug interactions are a consideration for patients and healthcare providers.
